This voyage may be done from either starting point, Marrakech or Fez
- Day 1 : Marrakech - Ait Ben Haddou - Dades valley
Pick up time will have been confirmed with your guide the previous day. Crossing the TiziN’Tichka pass in the morning. The highest pass in North Africa at 2260m, several photo stops along the way to capture the amazing scenery and views. Visit to a functional salt mine, and an explanation of different methods used to capture this very marketable commodity. Stop at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous in ancient history as a major stopping point for the camel trains from Timbuktu to Marrakech. More recently it is well known as a film site and background for movies such as Gladiator and The Mummy. Continue on through Ouarzazate to the beautiful Dades Valley. Also know as the Valley of the Roses, this area host a beautiful festival in May when all the rose blossoms are gathered for the production of oils and soaps the area is famous for. Supper and sleep at a Riad in Dades.
- Day 2 : Dades Valley - Todra Gorge - Merzouga
Leave from your Riad after a traditional breakfast driving through the Valley of the Roses and the route of a Thousand Kasbahs. Reach the village of Rissani in time to enjoy an amazing ‘Berber Pizza”. A nice stroll through the local market, make sure you check out the donkey parking lot! Reach Merzouga with time to change and prepare your bag for the overnight in the desert.(Luggage is left in the car with your guide)Temperatures at most times of the year warrant the necessity of gloves, hats and layered clothing as the nights are quite cool even cold! Leave with the camel guides for your trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes of the Sahara and sunset over the desert. Traditional supper prepared in camp by your guides, followed by music ,singing and dancing around the campfire. If you enjoy a challenge, a hike to the top of the dunes to see the stars is well worth the effort.
- Day 3 : Merzouga - Ziz valley - Fez
Wake early in camp and start back in time to see the sunrise over the dunes. A really beautiful sight worth the yawns! Breakfast and showers at the hotel. Leave with your guide back towards the mountains but this morning heading north west towards Fes. A nap in the car this morning is permitted:-). The mountain city of Ifrane, also known as the ‘Switzerland’ of Morocco offers a nice change in temperature during your travels on this day. The CedreGouraudForset , the possibility of seeing endangered Macaque (Barbary apes) is easily done for those who are willing to explore. These apes are also found in Gibraltar and are thought to have been brought over by sailors. This area receives the most rainfall in the country and is an incredible contrast to the rocks and sand of the previous two days! Arrival late afternoon in Fes where you will be dropped off at your hotel or riad by your guide.
